If you’re not feeling too good about yourself, are anxious, depressed or moody, then using recreational drugs is likely to make you feel worse.

Q & As about Drugs and Alcohol

  • “I like to have a drink and a smoke with my friends. If my doctor knew this he would just tell me to give up!”

answerMost GP's respect the right of individuals to choose to use and will not lecture you on whether it’s right or wrong.

However, doctors will want to help if you are having difficulty controlling your drug or alcohol use and will often ask some “screening” questions to see if you are at risk from harm. Don’t be put off by this, it is just an invitation to talk if you want to.

  • What are the effects of mixing drugs and alcohol?

answerThe effects of both are increased so you might unintentionally end up over your own safe limit and risk getting dangerously ill.

  • Why is there all this fuss about binge drinking – at least I’m not drinking all the time?

answer Binge drinking usually ends in you losing control making you at risk of accidents or unwanted sexual encounters!

If you “choose to use” make sure you do it safely at all times.

  • I saw the story about a girl getting her drink spiked and then some guys tried to hit on her… how do I know if my drink has some drugs in it?

answerYou don’t! So be careful when drinking around people you don’t know, and always keep a watchful eye on your glass.

  • “My friends reckon that “Herbal Highs” (Party Pills) are safe because they’re natural.”

answer Although marketed as natural or less harmful many Party Pills contain the stimulant BZP which has an effect similar to hallucinogenic amphetamines. The effects are generally unpredictable and can differ dramatically from person to person, ranging from pleasurable to life-threatening!

  • “What are the risks from using nitrous canisters?”

answer The commonest problems arise when users don’t take enough breaths of air between inhalations. This causes oxygen deprivation and can lead to unconsciousness, brain damage and even death. Other dangers include the high pressure and low temperature of gas released directly from the canister causing lung damage or frostbite to the airway.

  • “I’m sick of always being told not to use drugs! Can’t I make my own choices?”

answer Yes, of course, but remember some drugs are legal and others are not. If you choose to use make sure you learn how to do it safely first. There are many good, youth- focused pamphlets available with tips to help you minimise the risk to yourself and your friends.
